Good looking websites at a very low cost.
How do we keep prices so low?
We live in an age when Open Source software is becoming prominent. To the end user this means that many things that used to cost a lot of money to achieve can be done for very little. Here’s a couple of examples.
The Google Sites solution
Google sites offers the end user no on-going costs. A simple google site is easy to create (go-on, have a go yourself) and is accessible from any internet access point. It is hosted on the google servers so is likely to have zero downtime. To create a more dynamic google site you need a little more expertise, and that’s where we come in. A site may cost as little as £150 and that’s it. No annual charges at all.
The WordPress solution
WordPress has been growing in popularity in recent years. A small charge of a few pounds a year is required here as your site will need some space on a server. However, WordPress is fantastic at managing content on your behalf – you type the update and WordPress will put it in the right place. No knowledge of computer code is required.
A third option for schools – The Google Apps solution
A third approach is to use another service from Google if you need your site to do more than communicate information to the public. Google Apps gives your organisation access to many applications through an intranet. Cat on the Roof Web Design has implemented such a solution for a primary school which uses Google Apps as a simple on-line community, allowing teachers to share information with pupils. This has been achieved with nothing more than an initial design cost, saving the school many hundreds of pounds a year. For schools and other educational organisations it comes free after set up.
